Even though _______________, I will have joy!

Is life challenging for you today?  Not necessarily in a bad way.  Life can feel heavy whether we are facing unfortunate things or really great things.

smile

The Lord recently led me to this passage during our church staff prayer time.  At the time it seemed kind of random.  Then it appeared again two days later in a devotional book I had not picked up in a while.  I’ve learned over the years that when things like that happen it’s more likely to be God trying to get our attention than simply irony.  So I felt I should write about it.

Even though the fig trees have no blossoms,
and there are no grapes on the vines;
even though the olive crop fails,
and the fields lie empty and barren;
even though the flocks die in the fields,
and the cattle barns are empty,
yet I will rejoice in the Lord!
I will be joyful in the God of my salvation!
The Sovereign Lord is my strength!     – Habakkuk 3:17-19  (NLT)

Do you see how many times the author says, “Even though?”   3 times.

Even though (insert negative situation)….YET I will rejoice in the Lord!

I wanted to share mine with you today.

“Even though God is calling me to something overwhelming…..”

“Even though I find myself falling short at home, work, and in my health…..”

“Even though despite my best efforts, I cannot seem to get caught up…..”

In the midst of all that, YET I WILL REJOICE!

I’m sharing this to be authentic, hoping it might encourage others.  Now it’s your turn.  Take a minute to complete 3 of these for your self.  “Even though __________________________

So…if you are feeling overwhelmed by either horrible or great things today, let me encourage you.  Our God is our strength!  Period.  End of story.  Our circumstances are always changing.  God, however, does not.

A Dark Knight Falls

I arrived at work this morning to a call from my wife alerting me to the horrific tragedy in Aurora, CO during the opening of ‘Dark Knight Rises.’  First of all, let me just say this.  We should all be praying constantly for the families and all who were affected by this incident.  Its so easy for us to see/hear negative, negative, negative from the media on stories like this…..BUT God’s love, mercy, & power tends to really shine through moments like these!  So pray for it.  Look for it.  Expect it!

Now, as we all know, details about this incident will be surfacing hour by hour for days and even weeks about this event.  What was the shooter’s motive?  Was he mentally stable?  What’s his childhood and overall background look like?  Etc…..etc…..etc.

But in light of the big picture, those things don’t matter at all!  Why?  Because they don’t change the fact that many innocent people (including children) are now dead.  And for the survivors, that vivid visions and sounds of the event will potentially torment them for years to come.  These facts won’t change for anyone.

But there is still HOPE!

Let your unfailing love surround us, Lord, for our hope is in you alone.  Psalm 33:22

And so, Lord, where do I put my hope?  My only hope is in you.  Psalm 39:7

Why am I discouraged?  Why is my heart so sad?  I will put my hope in God!  I will praise him again—my Savior and my God!  Psalm 43:5

I pray that God, the source of hope, will fill you completely with joy and peace because you trust in him. Then you will overflow with confident hope through the power of the Holy Spirit.  Romans 15:13

for our hope is in the living God, who is the Savior of all people and particularly of all believers.  1 Timothy 4:10b

Sure, there are always going to be extremely negative & overshadowing things in life that will never change.  And although we live in a flawed world, we serve a very perfect and trusting God!  The verses above should remind us, whether in tragedy or in trials, of the promises of God.  His promises really do last forever!  He is good.  We can trust Him.  And its only in Him that we have unchanging HOPE!

Have you had the Dark of ‘Knight’ Fall in your life or someone close to you recently?  Pray…and wrap your fingers tightly around the hope that God has promised you.  Do it today!  Trust Him.

Do you feel the love?

1 Corinthians 13:4-7 reads:

Love is patient and kind. Love is not jealous or boastful or proud or rude. It does not demand its own way. It is not irritable, and it keeps no record of being wronged. It does not rejoice about injustice but rejoices whenever the truth wins out. Love never gives up, never loses faith, is always hopeful, and endures through every circumstance.

Wow! A lot of what Love is and isn’t. This passage is famously referenced in the context of marriage, but its intent is much more general than that. Paul is clearly speaking about our character as believers in Jesus Christ. It’s how we behave/react with each other in certain circumstances, and our attitude and feelings inside of us that often times drive our behavior.

Jesus came to be with us in human form unselfishly and purely out of love for us. This is how we now have the gift of grace in our lives. It seems to me that when we can fully embrace the above text, we can then feel the heartbeat of Christ toward each other.

This week, may you be able to love…and allow yourself to be loved. May you also not lose your hope in God. He’s still hoping in you!
